St. Bernardus Brewery
St. Bernardus Brewery
The Saint Bernardus brewery is located in West Flanders in the picturesque village of Watou, where a community of monks moving from France bought a farm and turned it into a cheese factory in the early 20th century. In the 1930s, the monks returned to France and the factory was taken over by Evarist Deconinck, who immediately signed a brewing contract with the Abbey of Saint Sixtus. However, the contract expired in 1992, as Trappist beer can only be brewed on the premises of the monastery. The brewery, under the Saint Bernardus brand, brews beer according to the original recipes to this day.
