Monkey 47 is a premium dry gin distilled in Germany’s Black Forest by Black Forest Distillers. Its story dates back to the 1950s when Wing Commander Montgomery “Monty” Collins of the RAF settled in the Black Forest, opened a guesthouse called “Zum wilden Affen,” and began experimenting with botanical distillation. Years later, in 2010, Alexander Stein rediscovered Collins’s recipe and revived the gin, blending 47 carefully chosen botanicals.

The production process involves macerating a unique mix of botanical ingredients - from traditional juniper berries to exotic spices and forest fruits - in a wheat-based spirit with soft Black Forest spring water. Distillation is done in small batches, followed by maturation in earthenware vessels, resulting in a gin rich in complexity: citrusy, spicy, herbaceous, and delicately fruity.

The bottle is distinctive, made from dark brown glass to protect the delicate aromas from light. On the label, a monkey represents the spirit of Monty Collins and his beloved primate Max. Monkey 47 also releases limited-edition versions, such as the annual “Distiller’s Cut,” which includes a special 48th botanical.
