Mussels, French Fries and Beer: The Taste of Belgium

Belgium is famous for many things such as their food, beers and culture. We will highlight some of them and tell you a bit more why exactly you should visit this piece of land in Europe.

Let’s fry

Belgium is geographically located next to Northern Sea, therefore the local cuisine consists of many sea based dishes. A very common way of cooking in Belgium is frying. And they do fry everything like mussels, fishes or shrimps. One of the most typical dishes in Belgium is “moules frites”, or in English fried mussels. It is served with crème fraîche, beer or wine-based sauce or simply with fries.

Obsessed with fries

Even though generall knowledge will tell you that United States are the country of fast food, the truth is that people in Belgium are huge fans of junk food. In the end, “French fries” were invented here. Did you know that?

So-called “fritkot” or frite stalls are to be found all over Belgium and are very popular. If you decide to get some fries, you will get it in crunchy cone with mayonnaise or other sauce of your choice. Besides the fries, these stalls offer sea-based specialties or boiled snails (escargots).

The best chocolate to ever exist

Who haven’t had the pleasure to taste a Belgian chocolate yet, does not know the true meaning of pleasure. Belgians are at the forefront of chocolate-producing countries. They manage to produce up to 170,000 tons per year. You can find shops selling pralines not only in towns, but also in smaller villages. There is a total of about 1,200 shops. Tourists like to visit the chocolate museums, of which there are 16 in Belgium as a country.

Belgian beer overcomes your thirst

The moment you try a Belgian food and desserts, it would be a shame not to try their beer too! But get something special, Belgium offers a lot!

We strongly recommend to you the Trappist beers brewed by monks in monasteries. There are only 10 of them, because they follow strict production standards. Some of them hod on to the original recipes of processing from the 17th century. It is also worth mentioning the white beer Blanche and red beer. Each style is served in a different cup. The popular semi-dark Kwak beer has a rounded glass bottom and the rest looks like a funnel. From so many diverse beers, everyone surely will find the one he likes.

Even though we already mentioned couple of dishes, there are still more traditional dishes and drinks in Belgium that you should taste when visiting it. If you want to try Belgian beers wherever you currently are, order them from our e-shop Drinkonline.eu.  We are a place focused on beer specialties, you will find a very diverse and unique selection.
