Five Interesting Facts about Mikkeller Beer

If you call yourself a passionate ale drinker, you should try out different flavours from different countries. In this article we will introduce you not only beer but the whole brewery, which happened to arise from an experiment of two dannish friends and evolved over the years into brewery with leading position on global beer market. Let us introduce you the Mikkeller Brewery.

1. „Phantom“ Beer

In standard conditions, the beer production comes from brewery owned by the person, who owns the brand or a manufacturer himself. However Mikkeller is nothing like a standard brewery. Considering the small amount of beers produced in their own capacity, Mikkeller is a micro-brewery. The rest of the beer production comes from different breweries.

If you ever heard phrases „flying brewery“, „nomad brewery“ or simply „gypsy brewing“,  you surely know what is it about. The founders of the Mikkeller brew their hop delicacy within contracted space, either based on their own recipe or to someone else‘s.

Mikkeller enjoys many different successfull cooperations with brands like Three Floyds, Brewdog, De Struise or Anchorage which can be seen on their bottle labels. Although the most of the production comes from Belgian brewery de Proef Brouwerij.

2. Started only recently

As we already mentioned, Mikkeller was founded only recently, in 2006. However in the meantime they have managed to settle in the market nicely.

3. Bjergsø as brewer - pioneer

The founder of Mikkeller Borg Bjergsø works tirelessly on improvements ever since the business started. Among many nick-names which are associated with him, belong also cult-brewery, rock-n-roll brewery or gypsy brewery.  Bjergsø jumped into business with his friend from childhood, journalist: Kristian Klarup Keller, with whom as „beer lovers“ wanted to discover beer flavour similar to Danish Brøckhouse‘ s Indian Pal Ale. Their first brewing efforts were carried out at their homes.

4. Specialist on different falvours

What makes Mikkeller special, is the amount of different kinds of beers they created. Although brewery is located in Denmark, the most of the production end sup in foreign countries (up to 90%). They export to 40 countries around the world and on top of that, around 800 kinds of beer circulates on the market. The Mikkeller produces mostly special or limited editions of their beers.

5. Several awards and primacy

Mikkeller won „brewery of the year“ three times, in years 2006, 2008 and in 2009 they shared the first place with another brewery Hornbeer. In 2014, according to ratebeer.com, which compares a beer quality of breweries from all around the world, Mikkeller came 6th in category "Best Awards".
