Chardonnay: Wine Variety of Diverse Flavors

If you say a white wine, many of us think of Chardonnay. It is characterized by its amazing versatility, in other words, every wine of this variety has a different style, taste even aroma.
In following text, we will try to explain why is this the case.

Chardonnay has its roots in Burgundy, geographically located in eastern France and it is considered as one of the most significant wines. You can literally find it in every corner of the world.

It is not a coincidence that this variety has so many different tastes and aromas and still it is considered as one particular wine variety. It is caused by a simple reason, Chardonnay is grown all over the world, in places with different climate or geological conditions which all affect the final taste of the wine. Let’s have a look on how you can recognise a specific style or type of this wine variety.

Climate matters

Thus, the first lead in distinguishing Chardonnay wine, is the climate or the area where it is grown. If you went to warm climatic conditions, such as Argentina, we would find Chardonnay in which you can smell especially tropical fruits, such as pineapple, mango or guava.

On the contrary, a cold climate would tell us, that Chardonnay wine will have a sour taste of green apple, lemons and limes. A good examples of places with these characteristics are some parts of Burgundy.

Ageing in barrels

The second important question that will interest us is whether it has aged in oak barrels or not. If you smell vanilla, caramel and candied nuts in it, the answer is: yes it did.

Apple-Milk Fermentation

Apple-lactic fermentation is a fermentation process in which malic acid is converted into lactic acid (which is probably clear from its name). But what happens to the wine then? Its acidity decreases. You will notice the buttery taste in wines that go through this fermentation process. However, it does not apply on all of them.

The diversity of Chardonnay is also related to the vintage of the wine or the winemaking technology of a particular producer. Interestingly, the variety also produces French champagne.

If you would like to try the taste of Chardonnay, we recommend our website Drinkonline.eu. We have different vintages of this variety from foreign and Slovak producers. Chardonnay is doing well in our country as well. Video reviews can help you to choose the right one.
